After installing I was spending sometime to find some of the usual stuff we are used to in XP and found few things are changed and thought it would be useful to blog them 1. Run command - to include this in the Start menu - right click on the start button and go to properties. Click customize and you can select the run command from the list of programs to be included in the start menu. 2. Windows activate button - Go to control panel -> system and you will find the Windows activate button if not activated or otherwise you will have message as windows activated. 3. Add or remove program - Its there in the control panel with a different caption as Programs and features. 4. Quick Search bar - This bar will be available in all the places as in Start menu, Control panel, Explorer. But in all these places it works with a context as if you search for a keyword "Activate" in Start menu it may not show you, but if you type the keyword in the search in the control panel it will. Will work more to get many more such information.... My first experience with Windows Vista UltimateOn receiving Windows Vista through my MSDN downloads, I was excited in exploring it. I decided to upgrade the operating system in my laptop (Core 2 Duo, 1.6 Ghz, 2GB RAM, nVidia GC 128 MB, 120 GB HDD was loaded with Windows XP Professional). So I ran the system check and surprisingly the report said that my machine's configuration was best suited for Windows Vista Business edition, but still could install Ultimate edition.
So I went ahead and installed the Ultimate and voila the new OS from MS was rocking. I bumped into few minor issues which got solved after installing the Windows Updates (Windows Ultimate extras). The whole experience was exhilarating. I'll be exploring more of it in the coming days.....will keep you all posted on my R&D. cheers,
Ravi June 25 TechEd 2005, Chennai – Carnival for TechiesGetting back to track with routine work seemed taxing, after the three day mega event ‘TechEd 2005' conducted by Microsoft. It was just fantastic as scores of people from various technical disciplines converged at the Taj Coromandal, Chennai to devour the best of what was being offered. This year's TechEd was truly a different one as promised by Microsoft. 'Different' in the true sense that it had 6 tracks of 8 breakout & 3 deep dive sessions over the first 2 days. The 3rd day saw 9 hands-on lab conducted by experienced Microsoft instructors assisted by MVPs. There was a lot of improvement in selection of sessions, the contents, delivery style and its flow. Sessions were delivered by experienced Microsoft product team members, Microsoft partners and influential speakers across the industry. Sessions covered everything from managing mature technologies to integrating breakthrough solutions on newly releasing products. This brought in a great amount of information about various new and future technologies from Microsoft and its partners.
The day started with a keynote by Ms.Sheila Gulati explaining the various new products and its release plans. The presentation also covered the tremendous growth of .Net, putting the pressure on other competitors and the acceptance of .Net in the industry as new generation development platform. The day continued with four breakout sessions. I attended the session on 'Managing Life Cycle with VS 2005 Team System'. It provided an overview of the suite of tools and its features. It was delivered with many examples and demos which gave a better understanding about the new integrated development platform. Next I attended the session on 'Understanding ASP.NET 2.0 Roles & Membership API' by Vinod Unny. The session gave an insight of the inherent security features of ASP.Net 2.0 and the various enhancements. It was well acknowledged by the audience due to Unny’s presentation style and the number of demos shown within a restricted time frame. As I was also required to manage the community booth, it was not possible for me to hang on to the sessions fully. I highlighted the various community programs by MS including the MVP, Community star program, etc, their benefits, entry procedure to such programs and the opportunities, to the attendees who visited the community booth. Day 2 – 21-Jun-2005
The prize distribution for the 'Spot the Solution' contest continued after the keynote session. It was a moment of pride when few of the participants from my company iSOFT R&D Pvt. Ltd. bagged prizes. The first prize, a Nokia mobile phone was won by one of the iSOFTian Ms. Sughasini, a watch was won by iSOFTian Mr. Thiruneeteswaran and iSOFTian Ms. Meenakshi won herself a book from Intel. I continued in the session on 'Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Internals' by a team comprising of Akash Maheshwari, Khushboo Sharan and Neeraja Reddy. It well explained the capability of seamless integration with various tools for project managers, architects, developers and testers. All the advanced features of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System were demonstrated. They also brought out the fact that it is an integrated tool that could manage the entire life cycle of software development. The session also highlighted the other features of VSTS and recent release of VSS. I had the privilege to attend a session on 'Introducing Avalon: Future of UI' by TNC Venkatarangan. Avalon with the vision of delivering a unified UI programming model was well handled. The advantages of Avalon in terms of introducing the new markup language XAML and its capabilities were demonstrated by Venkat. Only 2D capabilities of Avalon were demonstrated because there are many namespace changes and XAML tag changes in the recent release of the same. However, the idea of markup language for UI programming and the capabilities of Avalon to unleash the power of graphics hardware is a total paradigm shift. The session on ‘SOA and Indigo’ handled by Vineet Gupta and Janakiram MSV was very influencing and the style in which they put forth things were very innovative. Vineet explained the four tenets of SOA and the difference between the SO and SOA. The lighter side of the carnival : All the Chennai MVPs were invited for dinner at Golden Dragon at Taj Coromandal. It was really a close encounter with guest from Redmond, speakers from various parts of India, product team members from MS, our MVP Lead and community program manager. We all gathered at the lobby for the planning phase of the meeting and many preferred going for bowling before dinner. We walked up to the Snow bowling arena next to the Taj campus. It was 9 pm when we started our dinner meeting after a short game of bowling. It was a great evening where I had the opportunity to meet Shoshanna Budzianowski-Group Program Manager, Visual Studio-Microsoft Redmond, Stephen Styrchak- Software Design Engineer, Visual Studio-Microsoft Redmond and other MS team members too. Technology took a back seat when the cultural event ‘Rock Star‘ took off. Every one of us had a gala time. It was the biggest relaxation after filling our minds for great technology appetites. Stephen made a very impressive appearance on stage as Steve Ballmer which fetched him the title Rock Star at TechEd2005. These will definitely hold fond memories among each of us. Day 3 – 22-Jun-2005
I volunteered to proctor the lab 'Spelunking Windows Mobile 2005' by Gaurav Khanna. This hands-on-lab gave opportunity to the attendees to try all the new features that are being introduced with Windows Mobile 2005. It was very much appreciated by the attendees as it covered from the basics to advanced concepts like message interception, etc. I was also present in the 'Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System: Maximizing Collaboration with Team Foundation Server' lab by Akash Maheshwari, Khushboo Sharan and Neeraja Reddy. It was a wonderful lab session which took the audience through various tools explaining all the features from basics to advanced levels. Also it gave a feel of the capabilities designed for various roles involved in the SDLC but it left me wondering why there were no tools for requirement tracking and PMO dashboard. The list of goodies was as good and attractive as the carnival. Back cushion with Microsoft logo printed on it were given for all women participants at ‘All Women’s lunch session’ which took place on the first day .Visual Studio 2005 Beta2 DVD’s and T-shirts were distributed to all the participants. Early bird and just–in-time registrants won themselves technical books. TechED activities from registration upto closure were well handled by End-To-End Marketing Co. Overall the 'TechEd 2005' at Chennai was indeed a Carnival for Techies. We got all of them to 'Learn-Solve-Grow'. Hats off to the TechED 2005 team. |
